Rico Priem, grip and member of the ‘9-1-1' crew and International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) Local 80, passed away in a car accident early morning on May 11.

California Highway Patrol told Variety that Priem's Toyota Highlander veered off the road and flipped over after his extended shift concluded on May 11. Priem was pronounced dead at the scene and the Los Angeles County medical examiner confirmed his identity shortly thereafter.

The IATSE said in a statement, “We are dedicated to the safety and well-being of all our members. We express our deepest condolences to Brother Priem's family. Workers deserve to return home safely after a day's work. Unsafe work environments are unacceptable.”

IATSE president Matt Loeb said, “The entire IATSE family mourns this tragic event. We are supporting Brother Priem's family, colleagues, and fellow crew members. Safety remains our top priority, and we will contribute fully to any investigation.”

The show's production studio, 20th Television, offered their “sincere and deepest condolences to Rico Priem’s family and friends.”

Nina Moskol, a fellow grip on ‘9-1-1’, shared a tribute to her friend on the Crew Stories Instagram account. Moskol revealed Priem was close to retirement and had future plans.

“The most dangerous parts of the day are the commute,” Moskol wrote, urging fellow crew members to prioritize safety. “Take rest when needed. Get home safely.”

IATSE members have previously voiced their concerns, going on strike in 2021 to secure a 54-hour weekend rest period and reduce late-night shoots.

With their current contract expiring on July 31, IATSE is actively negotiating a new Basic Agreement with studios.
