Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced that irrigation cannels across the province will be lined to provide water saved from seepage to farmers at the tail end.
The chief minister said during a meeting with Irrigation Minister Kazim Pirzada, "In the first phase, 1,200 water furrows are being cemented at a cost of Rs10 billion, while 7,000 channels will be lined across the province in the second phase.”
She said the work would be completed in five years.
The conserved water will be provided to the farmers at the tail end of canals.
The chief minister said the government would soon launch a solar tube-well project for farmers.
She announced that canal water theft would not be tolerated and a crackdown would be launched for its eradication.
Steps to modernise the irrigation system and ensure timely provision of water to the farmers up to the canal tail were mulled during the meeting in addition to progress being made on the programme regarding lining of channels across the province.
The irrigation minister vowed to work for the welfare of the farmers.
Senator Pervaiz Rasheed was also present on the occasion.
