MMA Icon Khabib’s accounts frozen due to $3 million tax debt

Some of former UFC champion’s firms now reportedly closed over irregularities uncovered by Russian authorities

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) legend Khabib Nurmagomedov is facing a significant financial setback, purportedly owing $3 million to Russian tax authorities, as claimed by various media outlets including rt.com.

Bank accounts linked to his Eagle FC promotion and charity fund have allegedly been frozen in response.

Nurmagomedov, hailing from Dagestan, enjoyed a stellar career before retiring from sports in 2020 with an unblemished professional record of 29-0. His victories over notable opponents like Conor McGregor, Dustin Poirier, and Justin Gaethje solidified his legacy in the sport, leading to his induction into the UFC Hall of Fame in 2022.

However, recent allegations suggest a different narrative. In a post on its Telegram channel, Mash media asserted that Nurmagomedov owes more than 300 million rubles in unpaid taxes. Following his retirement, he ventured into various business endeavours, including dietary supplements, a restaurant chain, and hotels.

According to reports, Nurmagomedov's troubles with Russian tax authorities stem from his transfer of ownership in several companies, purportedly leaving relatives and associates in control. This prompted an investigation by Russia’s Federal Tax Service, uncovering discrepancies in documentation and resulting in the closure of some of his businesses.

Furthermore, Nurmagomedov's MMA promotion company, Eagle Fighting Championship, is reportedly under scrutiny, facing potential closure in the near future.

Authorities suspect that Nurmagomedov may have diverted funds meant for taxes to finance investments in hotels and startups in Türkiye and the UAE.
