The Duke & Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, continue their involvement in politics with a new campaign against election misinformation in the US.
Their organisation, Archewell Foundation, is collaborating with a bipartisan coalition and Hollywood figures to combat the potential use of deepfakes and other manipulative media during the US election cycle.
Experts predict both foreign and domestic actors may utilise such technology to mislead voters.
Google, Meta, and OpenAI have committed to fighting deceptive AI content. Two awareness-raising ads, produced by Bob Dylan's son Jesse Dylan, have been released, with Archewell assisting on further content development.
Since relocating to the US, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have openly participated in politics. There has been speculation of Meghan entering the sphere directly. During the 2020 election, they encouraged voter registration and denounced misinformation. Harry, a British citizen, stated he'd never voted in the UK due to royal tradition.
Meghan has participated in political events, including a 2020 online summit with Michelle Obama's campaign. She stated: "[Women] are not only part of the solution, we are a central part of the solution...This is not just about the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, it's about making sure our voices are heard."
In 2021, Meghan lobbied US Congress for mandatory paid leave, writing to Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer and contacting senators directly.
The couple's hire of Miranda Barbot, who aided Barack Obama's re-election, indicates a continued focus on their public image.
Meghan's activism dates back to her childhood, including protesting a sexist ad campaign and the Gulf War. She's an outspoken feminist advocate and served as a UN Women's Advocate for Women's Political Participation and Leadership in 2015.
