As millions across North America set their sights on tonight's total solar eclipse, we rewind a few years to the last time the moon completely shrouded the sun from our view.

The total eclipse in 2017 was billed as a once-in-a-century event, and celebrities embraced the spectacle in their own unique ways.

Lady Gaga sought peace, Kim Kardashian snuggled her family, and Madeline Albright offered a lesson on light and darkness.

Andy Cohen plugged the Real Housewives, Gigi Hadid wished for peace, while Donald Trump defied safety advice and stared directly at the sun. Bruce Weber improvised with FedEx boxes (his golden retrievers had to manage without).

The eclipse also inspired a book club-worthy gathering of Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen.

Even Paul McCartney took a break to marvel at the event. Ina Garten enjoyed the eclipse with friends, Elizabeth Banks squeezed in a Game of Thrones reference, and Nikki Reed and Ian Somerhalder's tech-free month was briefly interrupted – this was a special occasion, after all!
