The recent UNSC resolution regarding the Israel-Palestine conflict has provided a possibility for ceasefire in the war-torn Gaza Strip. Proposed by non-permanent council members and supported by 14 members, the resolution calls for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, highlighting concerns over the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza.

Three earlier attempts for a ceasefire had been vetoed by the US. This repeated obstruction raises questions about the effectiveness of international mechanisms in addressing such critical issues and shows the damage that influence wielded by certain countries can cause in shaping global responses to conflicts. Surprisingly, the recent decision by the US to abstain from the resolution represents the powerful influence international pressure can have. But critics argue that by dismissing the binding nature of the current resolution, the US aims to undermine the authority of the UN and weaken international efforts to promote peace and security. Even though the passing of the resolution marks a significant step in international efforts to promote peace and stability in the region, the extent to which this resolution will foster a sense of moral equilibrium among all parties remains uncertain. There are apprehensions that Israel, possibly with the backing of the US, may seek to undermine or outright reject the resolution, potentially complicating such efforts. Despite these challenges, the adoption of the resolution sends a clear signal to the international community and establishes a framework for ongoing diplomatic initiatives. Under such circumstances, it becomes a moral and political obligation to prioritise immediate actions to de-escalate tensions.

In the face of such tragedy, it is incumbent upon all concerned parties to uphold the principles of humanity, compassion and justice. We must stand in solidarity with the people of Gaza and strive for a future where peace and dignity prevail. Anything less would be a betrayal of our shared humanity.
