Asim Azhar is frustrated by X ban, says ‘ban everything but dishonesty and shamelessness’

The government's decision to shut down X follows allegations of rigging arising from February 8 elections

Pakistani singer Asim Azhar took to X (formerly Twitter) with an ironic post, expressing his exasperation over the latest ban imposed by the government on the social media platform. In two candid posts, he vented his feelings, saying, “Sab ban kardo. Insan bhi ban kardo. Khana bhi ban kardo. Hawa bhi ban kardo” (Ban everything. Ban humans. Ban food. Ban air). 

In a follow-up, Asim added furthered, “Sirf beghairti aur baimaani ban na kerna baki sab ban kardo” (Only dishonesty and shamelessness should not be banned, ban everything else).

The government's decision to shut down X is seen as a recurring pattern when faced with criticism, especially in the wake of political, economic and security challenges. The move follows allegations of rigging arising from the February 8 elections, leading to heightened tensions and a clampdown on dissenting voices.

As the ban extends beyond social media platforms to include cellular services and internet disruptions, concerns have been raised across various sectors. The unannounced disruptions prompt questions from all quarters, ranging from social media experts, media personalities and the common man, who collectively view it as an attempt to stifle dissent and curb freedom of expression. 

Asim's posts reflect the growing frustration among individuals who feel the impact of such restrictions on their ability to communicate and express opinions in an increasingly interconnected world.

Known for sharing his political beliefs online, the Dil Haara singer took to X earlier to emphasise that he refrains from participating in art with an underlying agenda. The situation emerged when the singer initially made a lighthearted remark in Urdu, suggesting, "You never know, they may be trying to ban the bat emoji." 

In his subsequent statement, Asim aimed to elucidate his stance on engaging in artistic endeavours that carry specific agendas. This led to the artist receiving a response from a user on the microblogging site, urging the singer to advocate for the banning of his projects with ISPR as well, gesturing towards Sinf-e-Aahan.

Without mincing his words, Asim replied to the X user. He stated, "Fun fact: Did not charge a single penny for this anthem/song. And the agenda is that I make a hundred more of such songs that uplift my nation or have a positive message. In this case, it was based on women empowerment: Sinf-e-Aahan."
