ISLAMABAD:

Islamabad witnessed the 4th edition of Adam's Islamabad Marathon on Sunday as enthusiasts from different cities across Pakistan and members of the diplomatic community gathered for the event, braving a drizzle.

Organised by the Islamabad Run With Us (IRU), the marathon showcased a significant increase in participation, with over 1,500 runners braving drizzle and overcast conditions.

The event, supported by the Capital Development Authority, Islamabad District Administration, and Capital Traffic Police, aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle, fostering marathon tourism, and projecting a positive image of Pakistan globally. Participants, against the scenic backdrop of the Maragalla Hills and through the picturesque jungle at Shakarparian, completed distances of 21.1 and 42.2 km.

High-profile attendees included the Ambassador of Denmark to Pakistan, Jakob Linulf, who actively participated and praised the organisers for a well-executed event. The High Commissioner of Australia to Pakistan, Neil Hawkins, also commended the diverse participation from different walks of life.

Notably, the marathon featured 74-year-old veteran runner Brent Weigner from the USA, completing his 398th marathon and marking Pakistan as his 205th country for marathon running. Expressing his joy, Brent appreciated the warm welcome and atmosphere he experienced in Pakistan.

The event attracted a broad audience, including families, children, and elderly individuals, who came out to support the runners. The marathon featured five categories, including full and half marathons, 10 km, 5 km, and a special 'Kids Fun Run' for children under 14, reflecting a commitment to inclusivity. Cash prizes were awarded to the top three winners in each category.

Islamabad Chief Commissioner Anwarul Haq commended the IRU for organising an internationally recognised running event. He also hinted at upcoming safe and dedicated cycling tracks in Islamabad to further promote healthy activities.

President of Islamabad Chamber of Commerce & Industries, Ahsan Bakhtawar, expressed his admiration for the dedication of the running community and pledged support for future events.

The journey of 'Islamabad Run with Us' (IRU), started in 2012 with founder Qasim Naz running solo, later joined by his brother Hashim Naz. Over the years, IRU evolved into the first running community in Pakistan, encouraging running and hiking for individuals of all capabilities. The group, which has grown exponentially, organised more than 500 group runs, leading to the establishment of Islamabad's First Full Marathon.
