TikTok shares election integrity measures ahead of polls

TikTok has announced its comprehensive plan to maintain the integrity of its platform during the upcoming parliamentary elections in Pakistan, set for February 8, 2024.

The platform has established strong measures to counteract misinformation, violence, and hate speech, adhering to its Community Guidelines available in English and Urdu, said a statement from the video-sharing giant.

"TikTok has robust measures in place to combat misinformation, violence, and hate speech in line with its Community Guidelines, available both in English and Urdu. The platform is dedicated to removing misleading information about civic processes, including voter registration, candidate eligibility, ballot counting, and election results."

In its fight against misinformation, TikTok collaborates with local and regional fact-checkers. This helps in consistently identifying and removing misleading election-related content. Any content that is under review or identified as unsubstantiated is limited in its visibility, particularly in the platform's For You Feed. Both content creators and viewers are notified about the potentially misleading nature of such content, added the statement.

The social media company said that an "integral part of TikTok's strategy for the Pakistan elections is the introduction of the Pakistan Election Center within the app".

Available in both English and Urdu, this feature directs users to verified information about the election, including details on voting procedures and locations. The Election Center is backed by advanced technology and support for local languages, aiming to provide a safe and compliant environment with the platform's guidelines.

Furthermore, TikTok maintains a strict policy against political advertisements. Accounts belonging to governments, politicians, or political parties are barred from using TikTok for advertising, fundraising, or any form of monetization.

Overall, TikTok's measures reflect its commitment to not just platform integrity, but also inspiring creativity and joy among its users. For more information on TikTok's election integrity efforts, please read: https://www.tiktok.com/safety/en/election-integrity/
