Jails should be relocated out of cities, says minister

Soomro states that proper utilisation of the Sindh government's ample funds remains challenge

KARACHI:

Acting Minister of Law and Human Rights, Umar Soomro, emphasised the need to relocate all Sindh jails away from civilian populations, including the proposed relocation of Karachi Jail from the city, a plan currently in progress.

Sharing his perspective during a session organised by the Sindh National Youth Assembly at the Sindh Assembly Hall, Minister Soomro advocated for live streaming of Sindh court proceedings.

He also voiced his opinion against the existence of MPA hostels, funded by public tax money, stating that proper utilisation of the Sindh government's ample funds remains a challenge. Soomro noted the release of Rs130.5 million to lawyers' bars by the caretaker Sindh government and highlighted the presence of 18 law colleges, including three in Karachi.

Stressing the importance of youth, the secretary of human rights underscored initiatives by the Sindh Human Rights Department to provide opportunities for the youth.

Secretary Law, Ali Ahmed Baloch, mentioned the construction of a court complex in Korangi and the Sindh Government's allocation of schemes to over 50 High Courts, along with Karachi hosting 27 Federal Courts.
