LHC acts against café closure violations

Justice directs initial fine of Rs200,000, escalating to Rs500,000 at second stage

The Lahore High Court (LHC) has issued stern directives to impose substantial fines on cafés repeatedly failing to adhere to closure deadlines, a crucial measure aimed at smog control. The order came during the hearing of petitions addressing strategies to combat smog, eliminate pollution from society, and safeguard groundwater resources.

Justice Karim, presiding over the proceedings, expressed dismay when informed by a lawyer representing the Judicial Water & Environment Commission that certain cafés in Johar Town were flouting court orders related to closure.

The lawyer conveyed the local administration's explanation, citing their engagement in election duties.

Proposing the establishment of a task force to ensure timely closure, the lawyer's suggestion resonated with Justice Karim.

In response, Justice Karim directed an initial fine of Rs200,000, escalating to Rs500,000 at the second stage, and subsequent closure if cafés persistently violate stipulated deadlines.

Addressing environmental concerns, a representative from the Environment Department urged the court to mandate the planting of at least five trees for every tree cut down.

The representative argued that fines alone could not compensate for the loss of a tree.

However, Justice Karim deferred further proceedings to the next Friday.
