Tourism generates $1.3 billion in forex in 2023

Minister urges incoming govt to identify untapped destinations in Sindh, Balochistan

ISLAMABAD:

Pakistan witnessed an impressive 115% increase in foreign tourism in 2023, leading to a substantial $1.3 billion in foreign exchange revenue, announced Caretaker Minister of State for Tourism, Wasi Shah. According to the ‘World Tourism Barometer’ by the UN World Tourism Organisation, the country achieved a remarkable 92% recovery to pre-pandemic levels last year.

In an exclusive interview with a private news channel, Shah expressed optimism for 2024, envisioning a transformative year for Pakistan’s tourism sector. He emphasised the promotion of tourism, identifying untapped destinations in Sindh and Balochistan for various forms of tourism, including adventure, religious, nature, weekend, rural, and tribal tourism.

Highlighting Pakistan’s diverse landscapes, including beaches, cliffs, forests, hills, valleys, and rivers, Shah urged the new government to focus on undiscovered and unspoiled areas. He also highlighted the country’s participation in global market shows like the World Travel Mart (WTM) to showcase tourism opportunities and attract more visitors.

The participation of Pakistan’s pavilion in the World Travel Mart in London, one of the world’s largest travel shows, garnered attention from travel enthusiasts, international travel companies, and social media influencers. Shah regarded Pakistan’s declaration as the best tourism destination globally as a gift for the nation and mentioned ongoing efforts to simplify procedures, encourage private sector involvement, and enhance the overall tourism experience.
