Sindh picks ‘Education and Awareness’ as year’s theme

75 years of human rights advocacy

KARACHI:

The Sindh Human Rights Commission, in partnership with the Human Rights Department, marked Human Rights Day, honouring the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). This pivotal document upholds the inherent rights of all individuals, regardless of differences, prompting reflection on global progress and challenges in safeguarding human rights.

In alignment with the UDHR's 75th anniversary, the Sindh Human Rights Commission selected "Education and Awareness" as the theme for the year. Recognising knowledge's transformative power, the commission strives to cultivate a culture of equality and justice by increasing public understanding of human rights and legal entitlements.

The event highlighted the launch of the Human Rights Policy, a study on Legal Aid Mechanisms in Sindh, and the introduction of Sohris.com-an innovative online portal serving as a comprehensive resource hub on human rights, legal safeguards, and avenues for seeking remedy. The portal aligns with the commission's 2023-2027 plan, emphasising diverse societal empowerment through heightened awareness of human rights. Barrister Rida Tahir, as the event moderator, guided the proceedings, while Iqbal Ahmed Detho, SHRC Chairperson, emphasised the UDHR's historical journey and its significance as the cornerstone of human rights. He highlighted SHRC's objectives, including addressing human rights violations, accessibility of complaint forms, and advocacy for Remand Homes and Women and Children Desks across districts.

Barrister Rida Tahir, Legal Consultant at SHRC, presented a comprehensive study on "Mapping of Legal Aid Mechanisms in Sindh," emphasising free legal aid as a fundamental right for fairness and equality in the justice system. The online portal, was introduced earlier, aligning with the commission's strategic plan for enhanced human rights awareness.
