Bystanders present at the scene caught the car driver and his fellow traveller as they attempted to flee and handed them over to police. Both of them, according to eyewitnesses, were intoxicated.

It also transpired that the reckless driver is a police officer, and attempts are being made within the police department to shield him. As soon as the driver identified himself, the law enforcers not only accorded him respect but also hid him in a side room at the office of Shahid Rao, SHO of Yousuf.

The SHO allegedly tried to dissuade the bereaved family from filing an FIR by advising them to settle the matter amicably. The SHO refused to share details of the case with the media.
