In the aftermath of her removal from the highly anticipated Scream 7 film, Mexican actor Melissa Barrera has taken to social media to address accusations of antisemitism. The actor, who played key roles in the fifth and sixth instalments of the franchise, was let go by production company Spyglass due to the perceived antisemitic nature of her pro-Palestine social media posts.

Barrera's response came swiftly, using her Instagram story as a platform to unequivocally condemn antisemitism, Islamophobia, and all forms of hate and prejudice against any group of people. In her statement, she expressed her commitment to using her platform responsibly, leveraging her privilege to raise awareness about issues she cares deeply about.

"As a Latina, a proud Mexicana, I feel the responsibility of having a platform that allows me the privilege of being heard, and therefore I have tried to use it to raise awareness about issues I care about and to lend my voice to those in need," Barrera declared.

The actor emphasized her belief in equal human rights, dignity, and freedom for every person on Earth, regardless of their background. She stressed that criticizing a government or leadership should not equate to condemning an entire group of people. “I believe a group of people are not their leadership and that no governing body should be above criticism.”

Despite the professional setback, Barrera remains resolute in her advocacy for justice and equality. In her Instagram note, she made it clear that she would not be silenced: "Silence is not an option for me."

Spyglass Media, the production company responsible for the Scream franchise had issued a statement asserting their zero-tolerance policy for antisemitism and hate speech. They cited their commitment to not tolerating any form of incitement of hate, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion, or any content that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.

As Barrera faces this challenging moment in her career, her steadfast commitment to justice, peace, and equality continues to resonate with her supporters, showcasing the actress's resilience and determination to use her voice for positive change.
