In a recent podcast Excuse Me hosted by Ahmed Ali Butt, veteran actor Adnan Siddiqui delved into the controversy surrounding a famous dialogue from the blockbuster drama Mere Paas Tum Ho, shedding light on the context and interpretation of the contentious phrase, do takke ki larki.
Butt initiated the discussion by referring to the dialogue's impact and the controversy it stirred, particularly the backlash directed at writer Khalil Ur Rehman Qamar for supposedly portraying women in a negative light. Siddiqui, recalling his conversation with the writer, shared, "I asked Qamar about the dialogue, and he clarified that larki was used to refer to a single person, not woman in general."
Siddiqui emphasised his reluctance to engage in controversy but focused on contextualizing the dialogue within the storyline of Mere Paas Tum Ho. He delved into the complexities of the characters, stating, "Both Mehwish and Shahwar bear equal blame. Danish, deeply in love with Mehwish, sacrificed much for her happiness. When he discovered his wife's betrayal, his rage led to that dialogue."
The actor elucidated that the dialogue wasn't a result of abusive intent. He explained, "In his (Danish’s) fury, he couldn't resort to vile invectives or swear words. He was a man of culture; he uttered what he did. It was directed solely at Mehwish, not intended to offend women in general. It's crucial to understand the context within the storyline."
Siddiqui urged audiences not to conflate the character's actions with real-life perceptions, stressing the importance of distinguishing fiction from reality. He added, "People should refrain from generalising; these words were specific to the characters. The characters in a storyline are not reflective of everyone."
Continuing, Siddiqui spoke about the notion that individuals, when overwhelmed by emotions, might react impulsively. He said, "People are humans; they're capable of anything in certain situations. Let's focus on the story; these words were confined to Mehwish and her actions."
Adnan Siddiqui advocated for a nuanced understanding of creative content, encouraging viewers to differentiate between fictional narratives and real-life beliefs.
