Senior cardiologist retired Major General Dr Azhar Mahmood Kayani, on Sunday warned that sedentary lifestyles, unhealthy eating patterns, stress, and obesity are the primary causes behind the rise of cardiac problems in young people.
While talking to the media, he said heart strokes are the world's leading causes of death, claiming millions of lives each year. A rising number of heart attacks among youngsters has raised serious concerns among medical practitioners.
He advised that young people in their 30s with a family history of cardiovascular diseases must undergo medical check-ups regularly. Today’s young generation is unaware of health risks, their false perception of being in their best health often leads to issues remaining undiagnosed, he added.
"Regular walking and healthy eating are the simplest yet powerful habits that people can inculcate to reduce risk to their hearts considerably,” he advised. He said every individual has a different body makeup and has a different ability to bear stress, but maintaining a proper lifestyle and staying physically active are the best things one can do to reduce the risk of heart attacks.”
He recommended that people should not ignore early warning signs like breathlessness, chest pain, excessive sweating, dizziness, etc. and seek medical care well in time. “Youngsters should eat healthy and avoid fat-laden food items. Choosing healthier food options can make a huge difference to your heart health,” he added.
Moreover, he said the number of people battling heart diseases is steadily rising, especially during the winter season.
