Jehangirpura market sees winter rush

The customers are raising concerns about escalating prices

With the winter season’s arrival, the Jehangirpura market in Peshawar has witnessed a surge in activity, becoming the primary hub for second-hand clothing in the district.

Shoppers flock to explore an array of items, including used jackets, coats, pants, and economical waistcoats. However, customers are raising concerns about escalating prices, even for pre-owned garments, making it challenging to find truly affordable second-hand clothing.

During the summer months, the market predominantly deals in Peshawari chappals, but as winter approaches, the focus shifts to used pants, three-piece suits, jackets, and reasonably priced new waistcoats. In close proximity lies Chitrali Bazaar, specializing in Chitrali caps and waistcoats, which, too, have seen their prices rise.

The process of obtaining jackets and other used clothing involves imports by Karachi-based importers, and local shop owners purchase these items in bulk. However, they emphasize that this business is highly seasonal. Although the winter season is typically profitable, it has become shorter in recent times, with extended summer periods posing challenges.

Shopkeepers also cite the burdens of high shop rents and escalating electricity bills as contributing factors.
