Portal set to protect minority shareholders

Initiative will facilitate investors in gaining knowledge of shareholder rights

KARACHI:

Pakistan Institute of Corporate Governance (PICG) and Central Depository Company (CDC) have joined hands to launch a corporate governance portal, named e-Go, to protect the rights of minority shareholders and educate and engage shareholders in governance-related issues.

According to a statement, the platform will be established as a joint venture of PICG and CDC, leveraging the domain expertise of PICG in the realm of corporate governance and the technical and operational expertise of CDC in implementing and operating state-of-the-art national-level digital platforms.

In this regard, PICG and CDC signed an MoU for the development and implementation of e-Go platform, “a groundbreaking digital initiative aimed at empowering and facilitating investors/ shareholders in gaining necessary knowledge of shareholder rights and corporate governance practices.”

“This signing also marked the IOSCO World Investor Week 2023 (October 2-8).”

The e-Go initiative is in line with the SECP’s vision to have more informed and involved shareholders and to protect the rights of minority shareholders. This digital corporate governance platform has been envisioned to equip shareholders with the necessary information, learning modules and training resources to promote sound corporate governance practices.

Describing the features of the platform, CDC CEO Badiuddin Akber said that the platform would enrich corporate governance practices in Pakistan through their implementation in true letter and spirit while leveraging the power of technology to provide a convenient, informative and interactive medium for shareholders to engage effectively in corporate governance practices.
