A few kilometres from Naran lies a small village along the Kunhar River that is popular across Pakistan as one of the most colourful villages in the country.
The old and traditional huts in Damdama (also spelt Dumduma) village can be spotted from afar rising in a triangle with the majestic mountains of the Kaghan Valley providing the backdrop. For most visitors, it appears as a piece of art painted by a landscape artist
The residents have retained the traditional architecture, using modern amenities to reinforce and strengthen their huts.
While traditional and ancient architecture pops up in other parts of the mountainous north, the popularity of Damdama stems from the decorative efforts of its villagers.
A variety of shades and hues meet the eye when you look at this small village located on the Mansehra-Naran-Jalkhad Road. A closer look reveals wood-dominated houses that were constructed decades ago.
It is in stark contrast to the development in surrounding areas, with an emphasis on concrete.
One of the reasons for the village’s preservation and prosperity is its proximity to the river. The land around the village is fertile and lush. The water is also a source of fish, including the trout for which the river is famous.
