Interior Minister Rehman Malik visited the Juvenile and Central Prisons in Karachi. At the Juvenile Prison, Malik met with female prisoners and juvenile offenders. After a detailed tour, Malik said that he has directed the Inspector General Prisons and Inspector General Police to study and look into the veracity of allegations made by prisoners. Malik also ordered the repatriation of three Afghan and two Indian children to their home countries immediately. At the Central Jail, Malik spoke to reporters and pointed out that how the cell phone facility was being misused by under trial prisoners and convicts. “Let no terrorist operate from jail,” Malik declared. “I will be making a proposal to the prime minister for establishing five PCOs (Public Call Offices) in each prison. A record of calls made from prison would then be recorded and monitored thus eliminating any misuse of the facility.” When a reporter pointed out that after the passage of the 18th amendment, prisons were now a provincial matter and asked if Malik was interfering in the latter, the interior minister defended his work, saying that he was in Karachi to assist the provincial government.
