Alvi urges collective efforts for social, economic advancement

Says active involvement of chambers, banking sector, and civil society a must

KARACHI:

President Dr Arif Alvi, on Tuesday, highlighted the need for collective efforts to address pressing issues such as unemployment, societal stress, improved access for differently-abled individuals, and increased female participation in businesses and jobs. He emphasised these points during a meeting with a delegation from the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI).

President Alvi urged the business community to take an active role in advancing social sectors and fulfilling their corporate social responsibility by assisting those in need. He stressed that collaboration between the public and private sectors could bring about positive transformations in people’s lives, particularly in the realm of social initiatives. The president also underscored the importance of volunteerism and the active involvement of the chambers, banking sector, and civil society in overcoming socio-economic challenges.

The president called for the creation of an inclusive society that actively promotes female participation in socio-economic activities. He encouraged KCCI members to inspire and support women in becoming future entrepreneurs, fostering confidence and empowerment among them. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of human development and advised the business community to create more employment opportunities for women and individuals with disabilities.

President Alvi recognised the positive impact of information technology on facilitating bank account opening and financial transactions for women. He urged the business community to provide a conducive atmosphere for women in the workplace.

He also emphasised the importance of prioritising the welfare of workers and environmental protection within the corporate sector, ensuring a better world for future generations.

Regarding the banking sector’s performance, President Alvi praised its achievements over the past three years. He called on chambers to develop fast-track mechanisms to ensure quantifiable performance, specifically aiming for 20 to 25% female employment within the industry. He commended some banks for achieving a remarkable 30% female employment rate.

The president highlighted Pakistan’s great potential with abundant natural and human resources. However, he stressed the need to provide quality education and skills to harness the competitiveness of the industrial and business sectors.
