Amidst a flurry of criticism, memes and general wonderment surrounding the religious affiliations of Rakhi Sawant after her pilgrimage to the cities of Makkah and Medina, actor Javeria Saud has come to the Bollywood star’s defense.
The actor who usually uses her social media to update fans and followers regarding acting projects and talk show appearances took a break from her career updates to voice her two cents on the controversial figure’s alleged adoption of Islam. Sharing a video of Sawant, the Pakistani talk show host emphasized on the irony of critiquing an individual who she believed was making a valid effort towards righteousness.
The video displayed a very agitated Rakhi as she spoke to press and onlookers after receiving an award. Donning a bright red abaya, and hijab along with a heavy necklace and tiara, the reality TV show starrer was very vocal about men in the vicinity not coming near her. “Men, do not touch me!” she repeatedly called out. In the video, while someone can be heard snickering at her comments, the retaliation results in an even more stern declaration from Rakhi: “No, have some shame. Do not touch me … I just came back from Makkah, Medina; all of you stay away.”
She continued on to say, “If I wear an abaya then I might not get work in Bollywood. Aur jab mere sar pe khuda ka hath hai, desh ke janta ka hath hai, Allah ka hath hai toh chahe mein upar se neeche tak dhakhi bhi rahoungi toh meri jo razzak hai, jo meri rozi roti hai, khuda mujhe aese bhi de dega (When I have God’s blessings, then regardless of whether I am covered head-to-toe, God will give me my bread and butter).”
Amidst the controversy surrounding the former, Saud seemed to find credibility in her transformation as she shared the video to her Instagram account with the caption: “Most people in the world always see something wrong in others. If you also see that, let’s build a tool that will allow others to become a better person. True and spiritual belonging doesn’t require you to change who you are; it requires you to be who you are. At least she is trying.”
The Indian celebrity had ignited a social media frenzy with her recent spiritual expedition to the holy cities of Makkah and Medina. The reality television star shared her journey of performing Umrah, the sacred Islamic pilgrimage, with her followers on Instagram. However, while some sent good wishes her way, others, such as social media influencer Mathira, criticised her for misusing religion in the name of “drama” and questioned the authenticity of her faith.
