The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has taken a significant step in addressing the aftermath of the military operation ‘Zarb-e-Azb’ in North Waziristan by disbursing vital financial aid totaling Rs27.55 million. This financial support is earmarked as monthly assistance to assist around 14,000 registered families who have been adversely affected by the military operation.
The military operation ‘Zarb-e-Azb,’ a notable chapter in Pakistan’s efforts to combat terrorism, was launched in June 2014 with the aim of eradicating militant strongholds in North Waziristan. The operation aimed to restore peace and stability to the region that had been plagued by years of militancy and unrest.
After years of concerted efforts to stabilize the region, the PDMA’s recent release of funds is a step forward in addressing the rehabilitation and well-being of those who bore the brunt of the operation’s impact. The financial assistance, though slightly delayed due to budgetary constraints, is poised to extend a helping hand to the affected families, providing them with a measure of financial relief.
Approximately 14,000 registered families, who continue to grapple with the consequences of the operation, will be the beneficiaries of this financial aid. The funds, amounting to Rs20,000 per family, are being distributed in two segments. A cash financial assistance of Rs12,000 is intended to alleviate immediate financial burdens, while an additional Rs8,000 is allocated as a ration allowance, ensuring that families have access to essential food supplies.
As part of the distribution process, the PDMA plans to utilize SIM messaging to transfer the funds to the registered families, ensuring efficient and transparent disbursement. This technological approach is expected to expedite the aid delivery process and reach the beneficiaries promptly.
The PDMA, cognizant of the significance of timely aid delivery, has assured that the next installment of funds will follow suit, mitigating the ongoing financial challenges faced by these families. This commitment underscores the authority’s dedication to assisting those who have struggled in the aftermath of the military operation.
Notably, there are still approximately 14,000 families from North Waziristan who have yet to return to their areas due to the impact of the operation. Furthermore, around 2,000 families have sought refuge in the Baka Khel camp, which is a collaborative effort managed by the PDMA and the Pakistan Army.
