KARACHI:

The Sindh Human Rights Commission (SHRC) expressing deep concerns regarding threats to journalists in Sindh have included physical attacks, abductions, harassment, and even killings like in the instant case of brutal murder of the senior journalist Jan Muhammad Mahar in Sukkur.

These threats often come from a variety of sources, including state authorities, militant groups, non-state actors and powerful individuals who aim to suppress critical reporting, SHRC said in a statement. Several high-profile cases of violence against journalists have occurred in Pakistan, leading to international condemnation and calls for greater protection of media professionals. SHRC strongly recommends implementation of Sindh Protection of Journalists and Other Media Practitioners Act, 2021.
