Food quality concerns grip capital residents

Only one eatery meets required standards out of 427 inspected

Residents of the federal capital are currently facing a concerning lack of quality food options as a recent inspection of 427 food and beverage outlets in the city revealed that only a single eatery managed to meet the required standards.

Exclusive information obtained by The Express Tribune revealed that the Islamabad Food Authority (IFA) has ramped up its efforts to take action against suppliers of subpar products.

The inspection carried out in July 2023 under the guidance of IFA Deputy Director Tahira Siddique, focused on various areas within the city.

Among the establishments that were thoroughly assessed, a staggering 402 were issued notices, mandating immediate improvements in the quality of their offerings. The deputy director also temporarily shut down 12 food establishments throughout the city.

The operations resulted in the disposal of 1,402 kgs of expired goods, including an alarming 31.71 kgs of unfit meat. In addition, around 317 litres of expired beverages and 305 kgs of spoiled food items were properly discarded as part of the cleanup efforts. The IFA's inspection also extended to dairy shops and led to the disposal of 48 kgs of dairy products.
