The contract for parking services at Benazir Bhutto General Hospital has been terminated and a First Information Report (FIR) has been filed against the contractor following complaints of overcharging.
The hospital administration made this announcement during a visit by Rawalpindi Commissioner Liaquat Ali Chatha.
It was revealed that the hospital has its own staff responsible for managing parking matters. Commissioner Chatha emphasised that individuals found guilty of overcharging should face direct legal action.
During his visit, Liaqat Ali Chatha also assessed the medical services accessible to the public. The commissioner was briefed that the renovation of the emergency block has concluded, and it will be fully operational by the upcoming week. Once operational, this emergency block will alleviate the patient load in the Outpatient Department (OPD), thus enhancing service efficiency.
Furthermore, contracts have been awarded for the procurement of 40 new air-conditioners and beds. The hospital's daily activities encompass an average of 2,800 to 3,000 OPD patients, 40-55 surgeries, 150 ultrasounds, and approximately 4,000 lab tests.
Officials said the emergency department tends to an average of 1,300-1,500 patients daily. Among the hospital's total 370 air conditioners, 70 are currently non-functional.
Rawalpindi commissioner instructed prompt resolution of minor technical issues with the non-functional air conditioners.
Liaqat Ali Chatha also visited the blood bank and encouraged the promotion of blood donation as an act of charity.
He then closely reviewed the hospital's cleanliness arrangements and stressed the need for an organised janitorial staff.
He said in situations where cleanliness standards are not met, the responsible medical superintendent (MS) shall face consequences. The commissioner highlighted the significance of cleanliness in maintaining good health.
During the visit, the official engaged with patients at the hospital, inquiring about the quality of medical services. He toured various hospital sections, including the children's ward, dengue section, eye ward, and operation theatre.
He stressed the importance of keeping all medical equipment operational to address public concerns.
Present alongside commissioner Chatha during his visit to Benazir Bhutto Hospital were Deputy Commissioner Dr Hasan Waqar Cheema, Rawalpindi Medical University Vice Chancellor Prof Muhammad Umar, the Medical Superintendent of Benazir Bhutto Hospital, and other administrative officers.
