Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt-starrer film Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (2023) opened in cinemas on July 28 and is predicted to be one of the biggest box-office hits of the year.
The film, which is a joint production by Dharma Productions and Viacom18 Studios, had a staggering budget of INR160 crore (₹160 crore) and entered the 100 crore club within just a few days of its local and international release. As per Dharma Productions' official Instagram page, the film has earned INR210 crore (₹210 crore) so far.
While Alia and Ranveer have been on a nationwide press tour to promote the film, Ranveer has also taken to Instagram to answer fans’ questions about the film and his character Rocky Randhawa. In a recent Q&A session, the Bajieao Mastani actor revealed that he does a lot of “homework” when a fan inquired about his ability to make his characters look real and authentic on the silver screen.
According to Pinkvilla, Ranveer made special efforts to spend time with a number of Delhi-based social media influencers in order to learn from them and ace his character’s accent and body language.
Answering questions on his Instagram stories, Ranveer also mentioned that the one scene from the film he is most fond of is the one in which Rocky delivers a monologue. “The way people have connected with it is rare and special,” he wrote. When asked what his favourite dialogue from the film was, he responded “There are so many! Some of the improvised ones are my favourite”.
One of the directors of the film, Karan Johar, had previously mentioned that the actor has a habit of improvising dialogues on set so as to make the character of Rocky more relatable.
In the film, the actor plays the grandson of Jaya Bachan and Dharmendra’s characters Dhanlakshmi Randhawa and Kanwal Lund who own a successful sweets business. The Punjabi family resides in Delhi and are steeped in traditions dictated by the patriarchy.
In contrast, Alia’s character Rani Chatterjee hails from an intellectual and artistic Bengali family. The two titular characters meet and fall in love on their quest to unite their grandparents Kanwal and Shabana Azmi’s character Jamini Chatterjee, as they were once star-crossed lovers.
While Rocky and Rani’s love story blooms in the foreground, there is a renewal of lost love between Kanwal and Jamini taking place in the background.
With elements of both a romantic comedy and a family drama interlaced into the narrative, it’s no wonder that Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani has garnered so much success and is on the path to breaking records for this year in box-office earnings. The film has also marked Karan Johar’s return to his forte of creating rom-coms, infused with just enough family drama to give audiences an enjoyable cinematic experience.
