Girls dominate matric exam results

Thousands of students in Punjab get over 90% marks

Girl students have clinched highest marks in the annual matriculation examination results of most Boards of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE) in Punjab, including Lahore.

The female students also dominated the overall results with a success rate of 84 per cent as compared to 76% among male candidates.

On the other hand, the performance of government schools remained poor as compare to the private sector. All the top positions in Lahore were secured by private schools.

All the boards of the province announced the annual results of matriculation exams on Monday. Provincial Higher Education Special Secretary Agha Ali Abbas announced the Lahore BISE result at a press conference in the board’s office. Lahore BISE Lahore officials, officers of the education department and school heads were present on the occasion.

Thousands of students across Punjab secured more than 90% marks.

The results indicated that students from South Punjab also surpassed those from other regions. Among the nine divisions of the province, students from the Dera Ghazi Khan BISE showed he best performance with 86% passing the exams, followed by 85% in Multan.

The percentage of successful candidates in the Lahore BISE exams was 74.57, Faisalabad 81.76, Bahawalpur 82.7, Gujranwala 80.82, Rawalpindi 77.2, Sahiwal 78.76 and Sargodha 82.82.

In the Lahore BISE exams, the total number of students was 230,915, of whom 172,204 were declared pass.

All the boards did not announce the names of ten top positon holders in ceremonies following a decision of the Inter-Board Committee of Chairpersons. The decision had been taken in view of controversies caused in the past among private schools over the top positions.

However, according to an unofficial announcement, a private school candidate, Tooba Azam, secured 1,091 marks out of the total 1,100 and secured the first position in the Lahore BISE. Another private school student, Muhammad Abdullah, got 1,090 marks and secured the second position, while Hadia Noor, also from a private school, secured 1,089 marks and stood third.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, a senior official of the Punjab School Education Department said private schools had dominated the results and a major factor this year again had been the marks in the practical examinations.

There are total 90 marks of practical exams -- 30 for each science subject. The private schools did their best to help their students get the 90 marks and thousands students had secured full marks in the practical exams across the province, the official said.

He said the government schools’ students suffered in this regard as their teachers and heads did not make efforts to improve their results in the science practical exams.

Lahore BISE Communication Officer Qaiser Virk said the result day was a crucial occasion for all students. Especially the marks obtained in matriculation are most important as they decide the future options of any student.

He said the BISE had focused on hard work and honesty, announcing the results transparently. The credit for the results also went to the teachers, he added.

He said over 1.12 million students had appeared in the matriculation exams in Punjab this year and the employees of the boards had worked day and night to prepare the results.
