LAHORE:

Veteran politician and renowned lawyer, Aitezaz Ahsan, has claimed that there is a plan underway to establish a caretaker government of their own preference within the federation. He also hinted at the possibility of extending the tenure of the upcoming interim government.

He said this while talking to the media in Lahore.

On July 16, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had announced that the coalition government had decided to hand over power to an interim setup before the scheduled end of its term on August 12. As per the Constitution, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is mandated to conduct elections within 60 days after a government completes its full five-year term. However, if a government leaves office prematurely, the elections are to be held within 90 days.

Ahsan raised questions about the ECP's ability to hold elections within the specified timeframe, particularly when the finance minister allegedly withholds funds from the election supervisor.

Moreover, Ahsan hinted at a plan to form a caretaker government of their "own choice," which has raised eyebrows about potential political maneuvering in the lead-up to the elections. The prospect of extending the interim government's tenure has also sparked debate.

In addition, Ahsan referred to the incidents that occurred on May 9, emphasizing the importance of investigating the Punjab Inspector General (IG) to reveal the facts behind those events.
