1Password to let users unlock password vaults with passkeys

Passkey is a new technology developed by the FIDO Alliance in partnership with leading tech companies

As a step to replace traditional passwords, 1Password will soon allow users to unlock their vaults with passkeys.

For reference, a passkey is a new technology developed by the FIDO Alliance in partnership with leading tech companies such as Apple, Google, and Microsoft. Through this technology, users can sign in using facial recognition or biometrics without even creating or typing in a password.

9to5Mac was invited to try out the new feature before the official launch. According to their report, 1Password asks users if they want to enter a passkey. Once the user opts for it, they only need to confirm and authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID, and the passkey will then be assigned to the vault.

For now, the feature is available for select users and will be rolled out to a wider audience later this year after the release of iOS 17.
