Police begin training of new Crowd Management Unit

3,000-strong CMU will be mobilised to handle emergency situations throughout the province

KARACHI:

The Sindh police have commenced the training of a new force known as the Crowd Management Unit (CMU) in an effort to effectively manage riots, protests, sit-ins, and illegal gatherings.

The 3,000-strong unit will undergo comprehensive training in international-standard baton-charge and shelling techniques.

During the initial phase, Sindh police officers have received specialised training from experienced counterparts in Punjab.

This training encompasses essential skills for engaging with peaceful protesters, addressing rioters, ensuring the safety of law-abiding citizens, and managing peaceful rallies.

Techniques such as shelling and baton-charge are among the key points of the training.

Waqar Milhan, the SSP Training and CMU Sindh, expressed gratitude towards the Sindh government for establishing this unit to effectively tackle riots, protests, and sit-ins.

The CMU will be mobilised to handle emergency situations that may arise throughout Sindh, based on the specific requirements.

SSP RRF Ali Raza emphasised that personnel within such forces are typically unarmed, but well-equipped with defensive instruments to protect themselves from potential harm during encounters with protesters.

The primary objective of the CMU will be to prevent and manage riots, rallies, and protests across Sindh.

The force plans to recruit approximately 3,000 personnel, with 2,000 individuals from Karachi, 500 from Hyderabad, and 500 from Sukkur set to join the CMU.
