Sex offenders register to be ready once its rules okayed

Huddle told they’ll be given nod by special body under anti-rape law

The committee on the rights of child’s focal person, Usama Malik, on Thursday said the sex offenders register would be finalised once its rules were approved by the special body under the Anti-Rape (Investigation and Trial) Act, 2021.

Briefing a meeting chaired by Law Minister Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar, Usama provided valuable insights into the technical aspects of maintaining and managing the register.

The huddle was attended by Special Committee and National Commission on the Rights of Child Chairperson Senator Ayesha Raza Farooq and Section Officer JR Sultan.

The purpose of the meeting was to present an update on the progress made so far on the sex offenders register.

During the meeting, the participants engaged in in-depth discussions about the framework and implementation of the sex offenders register.

Ayesha, the chairperson of the special committee, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to present the progress made by the body in developing robust rules and regulations for the register.

Section Officer Sultan elaborated on the intricate legal aspects that needed to be considered while formulating a comprehensive and effective system.

Law Minister Tarar acknowledged the significance of establishing a sex offenders register to safeguard the rights and well-being of individuals, particularly the vulnerable sections of society.

The minister emphasised the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of its citizens, especially children.

With strong resolve, Tarar reaffirmed his ministry’s support for the special committee and its efforts to develop a robust and efficient system.

The creation of the register is a crucial step in combatting sexual offenses and preventing the recurrence of such heinous crimes.

This register will serve as a comprehensive database, enabling law enforcement agencies to effectively monitor and track convicted sex offenders, ensuring they are appropriately managed and their whereabouts are known at all times.

By implementing this measure, the government aims to enhance public safety, promote transparency, and deter potential offenders.

The law minister, along with the special committee, affirmed their commitment to finalising the rules and regulations for the sex offenders register at the earliest.

Once implemented, this register will serve as a valuable tool for law enforcement agencies, facilitating better coordination, and contributing to a safer society.
