Huma Qureshi says she 'never felt different' as a Muslim in India

Actor shared that governments should be questioned regardless

Bollywood actor Huma Qureshi, known for her outspoken nature, recently appeared on an episode of an Indian talk show Seedhi Baat, where she candidly discussed the issue of religious polarisation in the film industry. Qureshi, perplexed about the existence of divisions based on religion, emphasised that she has never felt different simply because she is a Muslim.

During her appearance on the talk show, Qureshi, who is currently gearing up for her upcoming film Tarla, was asked about the presence of polarisation in Indian cinema. She was left confused by the question and said, “I hear such things nowadays, but I don't understand where they are coming from."

The anchor then explained the reason behind such discussions, referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to the United States, where the American media questioned him about the protection of Muslim rights in India. The anchor then asked Qureshi for her opinion on whether this was an appropriate question.

"I never realised that I am Muslim and I am different. My father has been running a restaurant, Saleem's in Kailash Colony (Delhi) for 50 years. In my personal experience, I have never felt it. People might have felt it. Having said that, I feel questions should be asked, and every government should answer,” she asserted.

While many users lauded her for “speaking the truth” about India’s religious tolerance, others criticised her for not taking a stand against the Indian government’s brutality against Muslims, especially when she has a platform to raise her voice.

On the work front, Qureshi will be seen in the film Tarla, where she portrays the titular role. The biopic delves into the inspiring story of Tarla Dalal and her determination to bring meaning to her life. The film, directed by Piyush Gupta and co-produced by Ronnie Screwvala, Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, and Nitesh Tiwari, also stars Sharib Hashmi as Tarla's husband. The film premieres on July 8 on ZEE5.
