Mayor Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, announced that the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) will be granted the powers of a magistrate, and a police station will be established to combat water theft. Additionally, local body magistrates will be appointed in the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC). By August 6, hydrants will be digitised, and their details will be available on the KWSB website. There are also plans to gradually replace sewage lines in Karachi and ensure fair water distribution.
Mayor shared these details during a visit to the main office of KWSB. The board’s CEO Syed Salah Uddin, Chief Operating Officer Asadullah Khan, Deputy Managing Director Revenue Muhammad Saqib, and other officers welcomed him.
During the meeting Wahab emphasised the importance of adding chlorine to water in swimming pools, mosques, and other locations with high water consumption to protect citizens from diseases like Naegleria. He instructed a survey of swimming pools in the city to detect the presence of Naegleria bacteria. Mayor emphasised the need for transparency in all matters and directed the KWSB to plan for adequate drainage during the rainy season. He further instructed coordination between KWSB and KMC to utilise machinery at specific locations for drainage purposes. Ensuring proper water drainage during the monsoon season is a priority for the authorities.
