KARACHI:

The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) plans to establish a fire station at the University of Karachi, aiming to enhance emergency response capabilities. In addition, they will train the university staff in collaboration with the fire brigade department, ensuring swift action during unforeseen incidents not only within the university premises but also in nearby areas.

Dr Syed Saif-ur-Rehman, the KMC Administrator, expressed these intentions during his visit to the University of Karachi.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed in the presence of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi, wherein the KMC committed to providing an ambulance, a fire engine, a coaster, and three mobile vans to the university's Transport Unit.

Dr Saif-ur-Rehman highlighted the significance of supporting the University of Karachi, given its enrollment of students from all over the country.

He expressed the hope that the culture of public sector universities being the pride of cities and receiving support from various stakeholders, as seen in the West, would also benefit universities in overcoming their challenges.

Professor Dr Khalid Iraqi, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Karachi, acknowledged the personal interest of Dr Saif-ur-Rehman, which resulted in the university receiving refurbished point buses and now additional vehicles for the campus. He welcomed the announcement of the fire station construction and staff training, stating that the university would allocate land for the project.

The repair work of the selected vehicles will be handled by the KU Transport Unit, ensuring their operational readiness in the near future.
