A surge in sandfly bite cases in Pind Dadan Khan district of Jhelum has raised fears of an outbreak of leishmaniasis, with the situation compounded by the lack of availability of medicines at local health facilities.

Cases of sand flies have been reported in the suburban hill areas of Pind Dadan Khan, particularly affecting the residents of Gharibwal and Jotana villages. Nearby areas along the Jhelum River including Jalapur and Peer da Khara have also witnessed a similar surge.
Meanwhile, locals have complained that public hospitals across the districts do not have the medicines to treat these bites.
Sandfly infestations are known to occur during the summer months in Punjab.
Sandflies are commonly found in rural and suburban areas, particularly in regions with dense vegetation and proximity to water sources.
These insects are most active during the evening and night, and their bites can cause discomfort and, in some cases, transmit diseases such as leishmaniasis.
