Pasoori powerhouses Ali Sethi, Shae Gill and Abdullah Siddiqui recently teamed up, this time with Maanu, to drop another banger titled Left Right, which came out last week.
Music video for the song, as many would know, is doing the rounds on social media since releasing on Saturday. The track is being lauded for its unique approach to sound and catchy lyrics. There is, of course, brilliant songwriting at play too, and while many would expect nothing less from such music whizzes, there is much else to be appreciated and assessed.
For starters, the song is fueled with passion. There is love, mourning, angst and desire, all in one. The ability to create such a masterpiece while having four people writing different parts with each part coming together so seamlessly is commendable. The lyrics string a whole narrative together that is furthered by the music video.
Musically, the song carries a lot of Pasoori elements with its reggaeton beats. It even starts off like a recreation of the Coke Studio number before it transforms into something completely different due to the alterations in arrangement. The treatment of the song and its production screams Abdullah Siddiqui while all the artists involved stand out in their own unique way. Shae shines the brightest, though.
Shae’s singing, coupled with her attitude, which is as clearly audible as it is visible, becomes a defining element of the track. Sethi’s voice, on the contrary, may be least suited to the song while he, along with Shae and Siddiqui sing in a higher register. Perhaps it was a creative choice. But we wish there was more of Shae in a verse or two.
Maanu, in his natural element, sings comfortably. Unlike Sethi, he does not seem to be straining his voice, singing in a lower register that suits him and gives the song a layer of character. It even makes him stand out in a way. But what’s great is that all singers’ voices complement each other while adding a touch of varying emotions to the song.
Left Right is a catchy, groovy track that is sure to stay in your head, and if you listen to it enough, it even makes a place in your heart.
