Spineless: Twitter calls out Aamir Khan for praising PM Narendra Modi

Actor called the politician’s radio show a ‘very important piece of communication’

Bollywood’s Aamir Khan praised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's radio show, Mann Ki Baat, calling it an "important piece of communication.” However, his appreciation for the politician did not sit well with his fans, especially since the Laal Singh Chaddha actor once felt “unsafe” under Modi’s reign. Twitterati called him out for his hypocrisy and shared how they “lost all respect” for him after this.

Speaking at the inauguration of the National Conclave on Mann Ki Baat @100 in New Delhi, Khan expressed his admiration for the show, and said, "It's a very important piece of communication that the leader of the country does with the people, discussing important issues, putting forward thoughts, giving suggestions, and leading. That is how you lead by communication."

When asked if Modi only talks about what he wishes to talk about, Khan defended the Prime Minister, saying, "I think it's his prerogative because he's doing it... It is his method of hearing what the people have to say connecting with people across the country. I think it's a very important initiative."

While Khan praised Modi while speaking to the media, fans did the opposite by bashing him on the micro-blogging site. “Aamir Khan feels enlightened listening to a man who makes crude jokes about suicides. Stars fall from grace quicker than a burst balloon,” wrote a user.

Another shared asked him to “show some spine.”

A tweep posted an old interview where Khan spoke about how his wife feels “unsafe” in Modi’s “secular India '' to show his hypocrisy.

Calling him a “sellout,” a user tweeted, “By sucking up to a psychopath, Aamir Khan has lost a major chunk of respect I had for him.”

Another user called it a tactic Khan used for his “movies to not falter” after the ban Laal Singh Chaddha faced. “Aamir Khan has come a long way from ‘my wife is scared to live in India’ to ‘Modi ji’s Mann ki Baat has a huge impact on people of India.’ This U-turn is the fear of Boycott,” read a tweet.

The one-day conclave was inaugurated by Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar and had Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur as the guest of honour. The 100th episode of the monthly radio programme is scheduled to be broadcast on April 30.

On the work front, Khan was last seen in the 2022 film Laal Singh Chaddha, opposite Kareena Kapoor Khan. The film also starred Naga Chaitanya and Mona Singh in prominent roles.
