Most influential readers’ choice: Shah Rukh Khan beats Messi, Harry and Meghan in 2023 poll

The star has shot to the top of the list

Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan has been announced as the winner of the 2023 TIME100 reader poll, which recognises the most influential people globally. With over 1.2 million votes cast, Khan received 4% of them, beating out notable figures like footballer Lionel Messi, actor Michelle Yeoh, and athlete Serena Williams, among others.

Having starred in over 100 films and being known as Bollywood's favourite romantic hero, Khan has cemented his place in the entertainment industry as an international icon and a legend. His most recent film, Pathaan, which was released earlier this year, has grossed almost $130 million worldwide, solidifying his continued success.

The TIME100 reader poll saw the Iranian women protesting for greater freedoms from the country's Islamic regime come in second place, followed by healthcare workers in third place. Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, were among the notable figures in fourth place, while soccer star Lionel Messi came in fifth.

Prince Harry recently made headlines with his memoir Spare, while Meghan Markle hosts the podcast Archetypes and advocates for anti-racism and women's rights. Messi, on the other hand, has won numerous accolades, including seven Ballon d'Or awards and his first World Cup title in 2022.

Khan's win is a testament to his impact on the entertainment industry worldwide. He is set to star in the upcoming film Jawan, directed by Atlee Kumar, which also features Vijay Sethupathi and Nayanthara, with Sanjay Dutt making a cameo appearance. The actor also has another project, Dunki, in the works.
