Poignant and heartbreaking: Fans in shock after latest episode of 'Succession'

The third episode of the final season has left many gasping for breath

Fans are left absolutely reeling after the latest instalment of Succession. Stellar performances ornament an episode that is rife with vital exposition, with the plot changing in an irreversible way. As a consequence, the Twitterverse exploded, with memes, thoughts, feelings, and emotions strewn all over the microblogging site.

SPOILER ALERT! For those in the know, the latest episode features a sudden death. This comes as a surprise to many of the characters, although hints of the particular character's deteriorating health have been present throughout the series.

The episode is both harrowing and funny, as the characters are in shock but also concerned about how their actions will be judged by the media and the markets. The chaos that ensues is caused by the Roy family's greed, bewilderment, and pettiness, as they try to figure out what happens next. The episode ends with many questions left unanswered. As viewers process their feelings, here are some of the responses issued by those who are in awe of the brilliance of the show.

"Half of that episode was shot in only one sequence," wrote one Twitter user. "The technical brilliance of Succession simply cannot be overstated."

"Every show that will be competing against Succession in literally any category at this year’s Emmys after watching this episode," penned another user, attaching a picture of Connor Roy saying, "Let's cancel, yeah?"

"Never trust an HBO episode that has “wedding” in its title," said another user, who seems to still be in shock after Game of Thrones' wedding episode. You know the one.

"I've been waiting three seasons to laugh and cheer at Logan's death," wrote one user, "so tell me why I just spent that entire episode suffering like it was not meant to be like this?"

One user penned, "I know there’s still a whole season left but episode three of Succession delivered what is the best episode of television I’ve seen in 2023 so far. An emotionally crippling hour of heartbreak that is masterfully directed by Mark Mylod. Strong, Snook, Culkin, and Ruck are riveting."

"Shoutout to Justine Lupe (Willa) and Alan Ruck (Conner) in this episode. Two underrated performances whose chemistry and complicity are both surprising and magnetic," stated one user.

Another user noted, "It’s the fact that Logan Roy died alone, on a damn plane. With people who aren't family. He always gambled with the love and companionship of his children in order to make another buck, to close another deal."

"Shedding tears for the worst people in the world," said one user, remarking over the show's ability to make one empathize with billionaires. "An absolute gut-punch of devastation. The way Succession handled tonight’s turn of events was a masterclass in so many categories — subversion of expectations, organized chaos in storytelling, and awards-worthy across the board."

"Not showing Logan Roy’s body for the first 45 minutes was brilliant for leaving the audience in denial, just like Roman Roy. I also wasn’t going to believe it until I saw it," echoed one user, stating what everyone was thinking while watching things play out.

"What does it say about Logan Roy that for like 50 minutes I thought this was some manipulative ploy constructed by him to outsmart his children?" questioned another user.

"This episode of Succession is going to go down in history as one of the best episodes in modern TV history, the kind that defines what the series has always been about while capturing the raw humanity of the deeply flawed, broken people that are the Roy Family. I’m still reeling," said another fan.

"I know a lot of people saw this scene as sad, but am I the only one who interpreted it as a huge win for Connor?" questioned one viewer. "He broke the curse! He's not gonna let his dad ruin his day like he's ruined his entire life!"

"Roman telling Gerri he was sad and her just walking out without even making eye contact - God, I am not your strongest soldier," wrote another user.

"Shiv’s shaking voice, her trembling hands, the panic in her voice slowly breaking into sobs - Sarah Snook just took everyone who’s ever lost someone back to that indescribable moment," wrote one fan.

"The way literally everything in the entirety of Succession has led up to Kendall saying ‘I love you. I can’t forgive you,’" recalled another ardent fan.

"I think we all need a moment to grasp what really just happened, but it goes without saying that Logan Roy will be dearly missed. The show will not be the same without him. Big shout out to Brian Cox for giving us an unforgettable character in an all-time performance," said one user, appreciating the man who shaped Logan Roy into all that he was.

"The LA Times putting out an actual obituary for Logan Roy is truly iconic," noted one user.

"Shiv realizing she can’t trust Tom’s comfort, Roman going to see the body, Kendall not being able to, and Connor getting married anyway was the most devastatingly perfect episode end ever," said yet another fan of the show.

"Friendly reminder, courtesy of Kendall Roy: you don’t owe your abuser forgiveness just because they’re dying," pointed out one user of the microblogging site.

"The way Colin, Logan’s bodyguard/driver/employee/friend/confidant, exists only as a foil to humanize Logan. The only character tonight to look at the scene with pure sadness. Not tainted with anger or relief," noted one user, highlighting a devastating moment from the episode.

"Now, how am I supposed to act normal in public, after witnessing one of the most devastating episodes in the history of television?" asked one Twitter user, echoing the sentiments of many.

"Succession is such a brilliant show about family trauma and seeing the kids in different stages of grief having to say good-bye to their father, despite the fact that he couldn’t actually hear him cause he was dead was so tragic and this shot will never leave my brain," penned another fan.

With a devastating third episode from its final season, Succession opens up numerous possibilities for how the show will end. One can say, without a doubt, that fans and viewers will be eagerly awaiting the fourth instalment next week.
