Overseas Minister Sajid Hussain Turi on Saturday claimed the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) was prepared to back Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif if the tense situation with the judiciary over Punjab polls resulted in contempt proceedings.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled that the ECP decision to postpone Punjab polls till Oct 8 was “unconstitutional” and fixed May 14 as the date for polls in the province.

The National Assembly (NA) on Thursday passed a resolution, rejecting the decision while the government called on Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial to step down because his position had become controversial.
