‘Controversial’ polls to lead to anarchy: Sana

Minister points out that the political parties and the judiciary were not in agreement over the matter

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah has said that a controversial election could pave the way for the country’s destruction, therefore, the government was strictly opposed to it.

Addressing a lawyers’ convention in Rawalpindi, he claimed that attempts are being made to conduct the elections in a controversial way. However, he added, the ruling party was not against elections.

He instead pointed out that the political parties and the judiciary were not in agreement over the matter.

He expressed concerns over a controversial election steering the country towards anarchy. “Before this, the elections of 1971 and 1977 were controversial as well; one broke the country while the other paved the way for terrorism,” he added.

The interior minister said that if the third election is held under controversial circumstances, then it would pave the way for the country to move towards destruction and anarchy.

“We are strictly against this destruction,” he declared, claiming that a majority of Supreme Court (SC) judges share their view.

He further said that elections held on someone’s insistence would not be acceptable under any circumstances, rather they should be held on time over agreement of all stakeholders.
