ECP summons Imran, others in contempt case

Electoral body directs PTI chief, Umar, Fawad to appear on March 28

ISLAMABAD:

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has summoned former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan, alongside party leaders Asad Umar and Fawad Chaudhry, in a contempt case on March 28.

The ECP had initiated contempt proceedings against Imran, Umar, and Fawad for issuing statements against the electoral body and the chief election commissioner.

The commission had previously announced its decision to issue bailable arrest warrants for Imran and other senior party leaders in January for failing to appear before the commission in contempt proceedings.

Umar already apologised to the ECP in the contempt case. He stated that there was no intention in his statements regarding the ECP that should be seen as an insult.

"If the ECP still feels that it was insulted, I am sorry. I leave myself at its mercy," he said.

The ECP issued notices to all three leaders, directing them to appear before it.

The alleged contempt case against the PTI leaders will be heard on March 28. The ECP did not disclose any further details of the case.

The summoning of Imran and his party leaders in a contempt case is the latest in a series of legal challenges faced by the PTI.
