ISLAMABAD:

Pakistan and Iran on Monday inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for supply of 100 megawatts of electricity.

“The project will be inaugurated at the earliest. It will ensure uninterrupted electricity supply to Gwadar and lay the foundations of a prosperous port city,” said a statement issued by the energy ministry.

The agreement was signed at the conclusion of Minister for Energy Khurram Dastgir’s visit to Iran from March 10 to 13.

During the trip, the minister held meetings with Iranian Minister of Energy Ali Akber Mehrabian. Both sides emphasised the need for developing bilateral relations and extensive cooperation in the field of energy.

They showed interest in initiating new joint ventures and forming partnerships in energy projects.

The aim of Dastgir’s visit was to finalise the agreement for power supply to Gwadar, which was initiated in June 2022. In a period of just nine months, an electricity transmission line has been laid from Iran to Gwadar.

Addressing a ceremony organised by the Embassy of Pakistan in Tehran, Dastgir remarked that Pakistan and Iran were two fraternal nations with bonds of common faith, cultural affinity and shared history.

He expressed hope that in future bilateral relations would continue to be on an upward trajectory.
