On Friday, designer Maria Butt once again became a trending topic on Twitter. A member of the former nawabs of Bahawalpur, known as the Abbasi family, called out the designer and her luxury brand for an "unauthorised" shoot in their private family graveyard.
Although the brand later released an apology on its official Instagram handle and took "immediate action by removing" all relevant content from its page, the heat against the couturier continued online. Tired of the ongoing criticism, Butt recently took to her social media to defend herself, mocking the "desi liberals" attacking her.
She shared a screenshot of a friend's Instagram Story, which said all "Pakistanis stand with Maria," and showed the sold-out outfits in Maria B's latest collection. "Thank you, my friend! Indeed Allah is our Raziq and it kills liberals to see us successful women at Maria B producing sold-out collections. Alhamdulillah," wrote Butt in the caption.
Prior to this, Maria B's Instagram account also issued an apology "to all those who were understandably distressed" by the "unfortunate incident." “The recent shoot for our brand was planned and executed by a production house with the concept of showing our magnificent cultural heritage in Bahawalpur,” read the statement. “The shoot was edited and published without any prior knowledge about the significance and sanctity of the site.”
On March 9, the photos and videos from the designer’s new collection ‘Roohi’ and were shared on Facebook. The campaign featured several locations in Bahawalpur, including the secluded graveyard of the royal family of Bahawalpur. Upon seeing the "disrespectful" and "unethical" advertisement, many angry individuals voiced out their concerns to the brand.
