Editor Daily Express Tahir Najmi passes away

Funeral prayers to be offered at Jamia Masjid in Karachi's Bahria Town at 1:30 pm today

KARACHI:

The editor of Daily Express, Tahir Najmi, passed away on Friday after a short illness, reported Express News.

Najmi was one of the founding team members of the Daily Express newspaper and was active in journalist organisations. He was the secretary of the Karachi Press Club and the Karachi Union of Journalists.

The senior journalist was also involved in the journalist movement against the then army dictator, Zia-ul-Haq. During the struggle against Zia, Najmi was arrested and held in Sukkur Jail.

His funeral prayers will be offered at Jamia Masjid in Bahria Town Karachi at 1:30 pm following Friday prayers. He will then be buried in a nearby cemetery.

Political and social figures including the president, the prime minister, Sindh governor and the Sindh chief minister expressed deep sorrow over his death.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah expressed his sorrow and said Najmi was "a reliable name in the world of journalism". The Sindh CM also prayed for the patience of the deceased's family members.

Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon offered his condolences and said the senior journalist was "a principled and dedicated journalist" who spent his life fighting for freedom of expression.

"Tahir Najmi was a teacher in Urdu journalism. His death has created an unfillable void in the field of journalism," said Memon.
