Court seeks subsidy record of seized tractors

Petitioner’s counsel tells court that ACE had seized 232 tractors, which caused a loss to his client’s business

The Sindh High Court (SHC) ordered the petitioner to submit the record of subsidy within three days in the case against the confiscation of imported tractors. A two-member bench headed by Justice Naimatullah Phulpoto heard the plea against Anti-Corruption Establishment’s (ACE) seizure of tractors.

The petitioner’s counsel told the court that the ACE had seized 232 tractors, which caused a loss to his client’s business. The prosecutor stated that the Sindh government had provided subsidy for the import of tractors in 2011 and 2012 so that it could be provided to farmers. However, the accused Shahzad Riaz sold the tractors in the open market instead of giving them to the farmers.

This caused losses in millions of rupees to the national exchequer, the prosecutor said KWSB in hot water The Sindh High Court has ordered the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) to submit complete details of water distribution in the city. Justice Mahmood A Khan heard the petition of the locals of Chishti Nagar neighbourhood over lack of water supply.

The court asked the KWSB managing director whether they have meters installed to measure water consumption. On which, the KWSB officials replied that the meters have not been installed yet. Justice Mahmood remarked that in which country bills are issued without meters.

The KWSB lawyer stated that the practice of billing of water without meters is practiced in all big cities of the country as well, like Islamabad and Lahore. Justice Mahmood said, “tell me any country in the world except Pakistan, I am asking for the world.” The court also reprimanded the KWSB over on dumping sewage in the sea.
