School’s registration suspended over ‘suicide’

Staff negligence cited as reason in suspension order

The Sindh School Education and Literacy Department on Tuesday suspended the registration of The City School, Jinnah Campus, Hyderabad over the death of 12-year-old student allegedly by suicide.

The department found negligence of the school management in the matter of the alleged suicide of the female student of class six, read an order issued by the department. The girl died after falling from the third floor of the school building on February 13.

"On the basis of evidence, including a video captured by a CCTV camera of the school, the two school staff members seen at the place of the incident could have stopped the student from jumping off the third floor ... [therefore they] may be included into the police enquiry," reads the office order of the department.

The department also formed an inquiry committee comprising Nusrat Parveen Sahito, the deputy director of the Directorate of Inspection and Registration of Private Institutions for the Hyderabad Region, and another deputy director Syed Naveed Ali Shah. Sahito said in a video statement that they had visited the campu after the incident. We did not find any responsible official from the management present there, she said. She expressed sadness over the incident and offered condolences to the student's family.

Meanwhile, the Hyderabad SSP has also constituted an investigation team, led by ASP Aleena Rajpar, to investigate the incident. DSP Makhdoom Ghulam Mustafa, Inspector Sagheer Hussain Sangi and Sub-Inspector Farhan Memon are part of the team. The team has been instructed to submit daily progress reports.
