Disney announces 'Frozen 3' and 'Toy Story 5'

Studio has begun working on the wildly beloved franchises, including Zootopia 2, which is officially under development

Disney has begun working on the wildly beloved franchises, thereby announcing that Toy Story 5 and Frozen 3 are officially under development. The CEO, Bob Iger, broke the news on the company’s Q1 earnings call.

“Today, I’m so pleased to announce that we have sequels in the works from our animation studios to some of our most popular franchises, Toy Story, Frozen, and Zootopia. We’ll have more to share about these productions soon. But this is a great example of how we’re leaning into our unrivaled brands and franchises,” stated Iger.

The news comes at a time when the conglomerate has taken drastic, $5.5 billion cost-saving measures, with nearly 7000 jobs being lost in the process. Given that sequels are a no-brainer when it comes to profits, the news does not necessarily come as a huge surprise.

In 2019, Frozen 2 raked in $1.45 billion and Toy Story 4 made $1.07 billion. These numbers are massive, especially when compared to the multinational’s recent original releases. For example, Strange World was only able to garner $74 million across the globe, and Encanto raked in $256 million globally.

There is also a fair deal of prestige associated with the revived franchises, given that Zootopia won an Oscar in 2017, Toy Story 4 was nominated for two Oscars in 2020, winning Best Animated Feature, and Frozen continues to make its mark musically, with Let It Go going 8x platinum and Frozen 2’s Into The Unknown being nominated for Best Original Song at the Oscars in 2020.

Undoubtedly, fans of these animated narratives have a great deal to look forward to in what is hoped to be the near future.
